Jackson – From Limping to Living Life Again

Jackson is a lovable Labrador cross with a story that begins all the way in South Africa. Born in 2014, he was rescued from a rubbish tip as a pup, surviving parvovirus that sadly took his mother and most of his littermates. He grew up in the sunshine by the sea before relocating to England in 2017—where he now proudly barks in a Hampshire accent.

Jackson thrived for most of his life—happy, healthy, and full of bounce—until March 2023, when he sustained an unknown injury to his neck. What followed was months of intense pain, stiffness, and limping, along with a long process of veterinary assessments, medications, and mounting worry from his loving family.

The Turning Point

Faced with a difficult choice between surgery with uncertain outcomes and conservative care, Jackson’s family sought a third path—rehabilitation. That’s when they found the Canine Fitness Centre.

Jackson began with physiotherapy, targeting pain management and mobility restoration. Initially, his condition was so delicate that hydrotherapy seemed out of the question. But thanks to steady progress and the support of his dedicated rehab team, Jackson gradually regained his strength.

Clinical Observations & Challenges

Jackson’s condition included:

  • Reduced hindlimb flexion and hip extension, especially on the left side
  • Medial placement and circumduction of the left hind limb, leading to a noticeable limp
  • Arthritic changes in the stifles and hocks, with significant crepitus
  • Pelvic sway and lumbar stiffness
  • Generalised muscle atrophy, especially in his hindquarters

He also struggled with sitting squarely, “plopping” down onto one side, and had difficulty rising from a sit due to weakness and joint discomfort.

Treatment Plan

Jackson’s care involved a multimodal approach, alternating physiotherapy and hydrotherapy to rebuild his strength, reduce pain, and improve mobility.

Physiotherapy

  • Laser therapy targeting hips, spine, stifles, and elbows
  • Massage and myofascial release to address muscle tightness and fascial restrictions
  • Carpal and scapular mobilisations, PROM, and traction
  • Balance and proprioception work using wobble cushions and poles
  • Home exercise programme (HEP) featuring figure 8s, head turns, and elevated forelimb holds

Hydrotherapy

Initially cautious, Jackson eventually transitioned from the underwater treadmill to the pool, where he:

  • Swam with minimal encouragement, showing enthusiasm for toys and treats
  • Worked on figure-of-eight swims, straight line singles, and lateral support exercises
  • Received shower and soft tissue massage post-swim

With continued commitment, Jackson surprised everyone—not only adapting to hydrotherapy, but thriving in it.

Progress & Transformation

Thanks to a well-structured, compassionate plan, Jackson made incredible progress:

  • Restored neck range of motion and no longer visibly limping
  • Much improved hindlimb strength and global muscle tone
  • Significantly reduced pain levels, allowing Jackson to come off daily pain medications
  • Able to walk 2 miles every other day, a major milestone for a dog once struggling to move
  • Increased engagement in daily activities—including bounding up stairs (slowly!) and enjoying cuddles in bed again

His therapists regularly note his enthusiasm, resilience, and endearing personality—he often walks into the centre with a waggy tail and leaves just as sprightly.

Jackson’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible with early intervention, consistent rehab, and compassionate care. His transformation from pain-stricken and immobile to a happy, active dog is a testament to his spirit and the unwavering love of his family.

“We’re beyond grateful for the team’s care. Without them, I truly don’t think we’d still have the privilege of loving our beautiful boy, Jackson.”

Now thriving in his golden years, Jackson continues to benefit from regular physiotherapy and hydrotherapy, showing that age—and injury—don’t have to hold our dogs back from enjoying life to the fullest.
