Strength & Conditioning for Working Dogs

Conditioning the Working Animals

Tailored to help working dogs develop core strength, body awareness, and self-confidence. Working dogs will benefit from conditioning programmes from puppyhood to their working career, retirement, and beyond. Working dogs have many of the same risks associated with highly competitive canine athletes and can reduce their risks of injuries by having a consistent physical training program.

Static Conditioning

All strength work starts on the ground or solid equipment working the muscles and joints with simple behaviours that build core strength. We’ll start this work in our specialist Cani-Gym.

Dynamic Conditioning

Utilising our Cani-Gym balance equipment we will work to increase the difficulty of the exercises. We’ll work on improving core strength by introducing unstable surfaces and number of repetitions.

Aquatic Conditioning

In our hydrotherapy pool we will use non-weight bearing activity to increase cardiovascular activity and work muscle groups. Where capable we will introduce Cani-Gym tools to the pool too!

Performance needs for service animals

Breeders, trainers and handlers of canine dogs used for protection, search-and-rescue, and emergency services know the importance of work hardiness for their working dogs. Dogs with these jobs are often exposed to different challenging and unstable surfaces and need to be ready for long hours of field work.

Our Cani-Gym provides the perfect opportunity for puppy programs to expose animals in training to moving surfaces and different textures on the paws. Throughout their working and retired life the training on unstable surfaces will improve body awareness, balance and strength to reduce injury.

In our hydrotherapy pool service animals can prevent and recover from injuries gained in service through increasing stability, range of motion, muscle development and cardiovascular fitness. Importantly hydrotherapy can help service animals develop more confidence and provides excellent proprioceptive feedback.

Performance needs for assistance and therapy dogs

Assistance dogs will benefit from core strength and balance training and strengthen the bond between the owner and assistance dog while giving the dog an important outlet for its excess energy. Therapy and assistance dogs need to be confident when walking across any type of surface and in different environments.

Our Cani-Gym provides the perfect opportunity for puppy programs to expose animals in training to moving surfaces and different textures on the paws. Throughout their working and retired life the training on unstable surfaces will improve body awareness, balance and strength to reduce injury.

In our hydrotherapy pool to assistance dogs can burn off energy and particularly with younger dogs reduce the risk of damage to developing joints.

Performance needs for working farm animals and gun dogs

Rural working dogs move fast in the field and often hurdle over and under natural obstacles to hurd and chase down their game. Having keen body awareness and a strong core can help your dog perform their best when they are on the job. Proprioception exercises can help a dog instinctively learn how its body moves in space so that it can respond to different environmental factors at fast speed.

Our Cani-Gym allows for a safe training environment to reduce the risk of injury from movements and uneven grounds through the development of muscles, joints and overall core muscles. Dogs learn to engage their core muscles and major muscle groups in order to keep balanced in unstable environments.

In our hydrotherapy pool cardiovascular endurance and stamina can be encouraged as well as providing excellent proprioceptive feedback and muscular development.

Please note that Puppies can not use the Cani-Gym until the fusion of growth plates are complete.
