The GOLD STANDARD IN rehabilitation treatments and wellness programmes for dogs

Transporting an injured dog

If you are transporting a dog to the nearest vet for immediate treatment you should do this safely and efficiently. Understanding an appropriate method to transport the dog can prevent further injury, protect you from dangerous situations, and allow for the timely provision of appropriate treatment.

Always ring the veterinary surgeon as soon as possible.

Be careful when moving dogs who are in pain as they may try to bite or scratch. You may need to wrap a towel around a small dog or muzzle a dog to prevent injuries to yourself.

Small dogs could be transported in a strong box or cat basket. Larger dogs should be lifted with a blanket or thick towel that they are rolled onto and lifted between several people. Be very careful using a home made stretcher like a board or door as a recumbent dog may come to and jump off in panic.
