Classification of emergencies

By understanding how we classify emergencies you can make informed choices. You should have a clear understanding of the different types of emergencies you may have to deal with so that you can evaluate each situation and understanding the priorities to preserve life and prevent suffering.

A simple and clear classification is invaluable in establishing how to prioritise your actions. Remember to always ring the vet as soon as possible.

An emergency can be classified as:

  • Life threatening – requires immediate action by a first aider and/or vet surgeon
  • Immediate – requires prompt attention by the vet surgeon but is not immediately life threatening
  • Minor – where telephone advice and first aid enables the dog to be kept comfortable until an appointment with a vet can be made
